How did Hip-Hop come into your life and evolve into a vehicle of self-expressing and as a platform for social activism and community engagement?

Hip-Hop was first introduced to me by my cousin back in your Kriss Kross days, since then I've been hooked. Back then, I never thought Hip-Hop would be such a huge part of my life through to this day. I remember studying mix-tapes I could access back then, listening to beats, the approaches and deliveries, and content-shared in the musical productions - at one point I realised how much could be said on a 3 minute track! As a vehicle of communication, as a tool to express life and preserve the essence of what truly is - is also how my Hip-Hop journey started. I had so much to say - what started as a hobby became a part of my life in a big way.

Your songwriting stimulates a movement for peace, freedom, independence, greater consciousness and self-awareness - why is this important to you?

Well the world is not what it seems. There is so much tainted information going around that even the people in the right positions do not bother and/or care to alert and mobilise people and the public on what's really happening around us. Having the knowledge of these social-ills impacting us caused me realise that I could either be the clued-up sheep that doesn't share the dangers around the farm or I could be the sheep that plays his part in sharing and preparing ALL the animals on the farm for a bigger revolution that is soon to take place - My message is - We all stand together and fight for what's right for all and everyone...

I use my musical talents as a tool, spreading positive vibrations in and around my state of being. I use what I already have to effectively spread messages about the power-structures and abuses of power, I alert communinities that are being taken advantage of - I speak out on acts of injustice against humanity.

Do you feel as though you have tapped into a purpose, a passion, a calling – your life’s work?

I feel we all have a reason to our existence and everything around is either there to help shape your purpose or develop your knowledge. When you find your purpose, you will know, because from that point on, u wanna give it all you got. You are more focused in making it happen and your curiosity of what's next is exactly what keeps you going. I'm at that point where I don't really have a full on idea of what I am doing. One thing I do know - is that I'm on the right path and learning more as I go.

You refer to your musical endeavors as that of being an independent Hip-Hop worker and activist - what is your message, the relevance of activism in today’s world and our future tomorrows?

Being independent simply means to me that I'm anti-capitalist/anti-capitalism through my art - I am self-reliant and I invest in my own art to express with like-minded people about what I do - to share goals and ideas...

What I am sharing with people, the message I am spreading is that we need to rely on (GOD First) OUR-Selves for a better life.

Be self-sufficient and reliant - Nothing beats the system better than people who are able to build things for themselves, plant there own foods, etc...

Your musical approach deals many pressing issues – concepts of freedom, questions of our own humanity, of our human response-abilities, of being alive, being radical enough, brave enough, bold enough – how does this relate to global affairs – our future selves?

First of all, the media will never share the information people actually need to hear - they'd rather broadcast shallow material that keeps people in a comfortable/stagnant position where they stop asking questions and do not follow their curiosities. Curiosity exists for a reason, this has been a part of us since day 1 of our very existence, natural to our being - why not follow it and see where it will take you.

My music is my weapon, my tool is being able to loan eyes to the blind, give an ear to the deaf, and the dumb a voice. What I discover - I share, by doing so I am able spark actions and opinions from a lot of minds feeling the same and/or are curios about the state of humanity. I'm not the first to do this nor will I be the last to spark minds on such apsects, at such depths, and on such levels - I'm just a drop in the ocean playing my part in causing a revolutionary ripple-effect that will cause and stimulate an awakening to mankind.

What is your sense, your own understanding on the concept of community in shaping our contemporary worlds – How might a South African conception of community differ from a Western premise and understanding of community?

The community is the foundation of any and all generations coming up... What happens around us and our environments can, and often do, determine whether you are and will be a success or failure in life. Hence the saying of being 'a product of one's environment'- so depending on how you look at your upbringing, it can either make or break you.

In South Africa we say, as one should hope is said across the world 'it takes a village to raise a child'. Aspects such as parenting alone are not the only input shaping your child's destiny and life, it also requires a good community that takes care of its own. This is the Ubuntu way of life - a way of living that recognizes 'I Am Coz We Are' - to live in the act of harmony.

The concept of Ubuntu may neither be unique to Africa or universally desirable nor existing in any idealistic form in current society - yet it remains to have meaningful and functional significance - Ubuntu reflects community.

How did the Soco Show: Human Writes come into being? what is The Social Commentary Forum all about and the events put out by SCF?

The Social Commentary Forum stands exactly for what the name means in any and every definition you can find:
We are the people, for the people, mobilising truth through music and preserving the expressive arts of Hip-Hop for what it is.

The SoCo shows are an exclusive platform that takes place the last Saturday of every month - it's where artists, DJs, and hosts are invited to come share and entertain their supporters, while simultaneously enabling each artists to widen their reach. Every year on the 27th of March, South Africa celebrates Human Rights Day - a day tagged in South African history books as the "Sharpville Massacres" of the 1960's. So we decided to come together with the team to do a tribute show to our fallen and unsung heroes one every year on the 30th of March. We invited Articulate Artists and Brothers of the Mic, myself included, to push a show that was content-driven and specifically tailored as a way of expressing justice to the unjust system of freedom of speech through music...

How has your collaboration with the Social Commentary Forum played a part in activating greater awareness, conscious development, and community engagement within Soweto – around and about Johannesburg – and on a global scale?

SCF is a movement of like minds out for a greater cause both as a unit and as individuals. Working with such extraordinary beings is what made me realise how much as a people we have in common. We were all on the same path prior meeting yet in different landscapes and different stages. When we got together as a collective we centralised our individual followers to one mass following for both sharing and communicating about current issues we are facing.

Working on the SoCo Flow album was one true honour and a blessing to be actively be part of - we created songs that are not only timeless but are also deeply focused and driven by the content itself making the the music very current and very empowering. Songs like 'Be Proud', 'Extra Extra' and 'Be Happy' are just a few tracks on the album which have raised the alarm on the circumstances of humanity, capitalism, religion, police brutality and the controlling manipulation, shaping us and controlling us. As a collective, The Social Commentary Forum's work and musical awareness building endeavors has been greatly received at home and places around the world. What we are witnessing now is how people are trying to be a part of this great movement for a real social commentary, people do want to play a part in the greater awakening of mankind - which we (Social Commentary Forum) encourages to be done in your own means.

What is the role of social media and technologies in your propelling your message, your work and your music forward into the world – in expanding and widening the exchange of passion?

Social networks and technology does play a big role in advancing in communication, indeed there are numerous conveniences in creating platforms, for sharing information, promoting business and entreprise, and it's become a great way to share your personal life-experiences with friends and family. If social networks did not exsist this very interview would not have been possible. I use social media to promote positive and healthy living, address and call attention to social-ills currently impacting us and our communities and to share my musical creations and life.

How do you define your process, your success, your dreams? What are those things you have found most challenging – those challenges that have impacted and shifted your own personal aspirations and visions?

People weigh the success of my endeavours, I'm not one to seek feed back from people about decisions I make. My actions would rather spark something in the heart of another. If I can make someone smile even for a second, make them think positively about life and start to question and realise what's going on around them then I know I did good for the day.

If I were to define my process I would say my thoughts gravitate to a place of the unknown, where anything is possible as long as I believe in the ideas and act whole hearted in making them manifest to life with out a shadow of doubt. Its not as easy as it sounds, of course, there are and will be obstacles along the way but with a plan grounded in patience, persistence and dedication - all falls into place at Gods Speed.

What is it that you are most excited about at the moment?

We'll life is always exciting for me... I get inspired by so much events taking place around me both positive and negative, meeting new people, sharing thoughts and ideas or just simply smiling makes my life exciting.

Currently working on my solo release which is the 3rd and last segment to a trilogy titled 'RONG RUFF & RUGGED' due for release before end of 2013. This album presents another exciting and unfolding chapter of my life that I anticipate will not only be about me as an artists, but will also be about the people listening and following what I stay up late so many nights to create. I am also an events organiser and promoter working his way up in mobilising the Hip-Hop community in the best direction I know - not saying it's the best way rather it's a continually step forward to evoking action amongst our peers, colleagues, communities, collaborators, and upcoming generations and groups.
